High-speed winds across Monroe County take down utility poles in Greece

GREECE, N.Y. — High wind speeds caused significant damage across Monroe County on Friday, knocking down multiple utility poles in Greece.

The gusts took down several utility poles on Frisbee Hill Road in Greece, temporarily blocking the road as crews worked on repairs. The Greece Police Department (GPD) confirmed the downed wires were not live.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow went out to the scene Friday morning and spoke with neighbors who shared their experiences. Greece police confirmed that Frisbee Hill Road has since reopened.

Neighbors said they heard loud booms in the middle of the night and saw flashes of light through their windows. One woman’s electrical box was ripped off her house. Greece officials reported the events occurred around 1:30 a.m.

Pamela Randall, a resident of Frisbee Hill Road, described the experience.

“I was asleep and around three o’clock in the morning I heard a huge boom. And then I heard another one, and it woke me up. And then another one and I got up and I like, went out to see what was going on, and my mother was at the door and she said there’s wires down… we were thinking we were going to be without power for a week,” Randall said.

Randall was relieved that she only lost power for a few hours.
