The traditional Christmas Day box office featured several big-name theatrical debuts. From the Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson-led Song Sung Blue to Tom Gormican‘s Anaconda, starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd, to the exciting arrival of Timothée Chalamet‘s Marty Supreme, there was plenty to enjoy on the big screen this December 25. Because of this, the upcoming weekend’s box office slate is void of major new arrivals. With that in mind, your head might be turned toward streaming as you cozy up on your couch ahead of the new year and catch the best the small screen has to offer. ‘Sinners’ (2025)

As the race for the 2026 Oscars enters a new chapter at the dawn of the new year, it’s time to either remind yourself of or finally check out one of the most likely season contenders. Black Panther director Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan as two twins, who return to their hometown with dreams of starting anew. However, on the opening night of their new venture, a bloodthirsty danger knocks on the door.
A masterpiece in both visual and narrative filmmaking, Sinners is the horror gem the 2025 box office desperately needed when it arrived. The film features the finest performance of Jordan’s career, as well as one of the most impressive ensembles of the year, certain to be a contender for the trophy in this upcoming Academy Award ceremony’s new Best Casting category.

‘The Creator’ (2023)

For a blast of fresh sci-fi this weekend, why not check out director Gareth Edwards‘ The Creator? Starring John David Washington and Gemma Chan, the film follows a former soldier who, in the middle of a vicious war between humans and robots, discovers the secret weapon that could end the conflict: a child.
Visually epic but sadly buckling under the weight of its narrative ambition, The Creator opened to mixed reviews back in 2023. Two years on, and its stock has risen as more have watched without the level of expectation of 2023 audiences. An adventure like no other, The Creator received two Academy Award nominations in 2024, earning nods for Best Sound and Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

‘Madagascar’ (2005)

If this is you, and you’re looking for a family-friendly treat this weekend, check out Madagascar. A DreamWorks project that spawned a successful franchise, Madagascar follows the animals of a New York Zoo as they find themselves in the jungles of the titular island country, struggling to survive.
Boasting vocal performances from the likes of Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer, and more, this cruelly underrated animated gem has much more substance than many would realize. With a tale of friendship and solidarity in the face of the unknown, the movie has an emotional core that might surprise some, but, of course, thrives in its comedic moments, with a talented cast getting the chance to shine.
