SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Children ages 4 to 12 learned about science, technology, engineering and math concepts through hands-on activities on Friday, Dec. 27.
at the STEM Saturday Innovation Studio at the Aalfs Downtown Library in Sioux City. The event gave children a chance to explore STEM concepts while school is out for winter break.
Adrienne Dunn, Youth Services Manager with the Sioux City Public Library, says children learned about how things work and how to deal with challenges when things don’t work.
“It’s just a real opportunity to tinker, practice learning, explore ideas and design principles, such as trying something. ‘It didn’t quite work the way I wished it would,’ and then trying to make some changes and small tweaks to try it again, which are really life skills. When we run into challenges, that’s what we have to do: ‘Oh, that didn’t work. Let me try a different way,’” Dunn said.
She says while kids learn on their own at school, this event gives them a unique opportunity to learn with their families.
“That’s what we love about the library. We get to infuse learning with fun and provide an opportunity for families to come together to learn. Like with our innovation studio, the kids got a chance to tinker first and then we invite parents to join them and help them learn, but also they get to learn too, and as a family, that’s a really fun thing to do too,” Dunn said.
