Gale-force winds and a sharp chill dominate the weather across much of Greece today, with northern regions bearing the brunt of the conditions, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).
Northwesterly winds are reaching storm-force levels in parts of Central Macedonia and the Sporades, with gusts of up to 8–9 Beaufort and locally higher. Thessaloniki and surrounding areas are experiencing particularly difficult conditions, with strong winds significantly lowering the perceived temperature.
Meteorologists warn that the most intense period is expected from late morning through late evening, with hazardous conditions on exposed roads, bridges, and coastal areas. The strong winds increase the risk of falling branches and unsecured objects, while driving conditions may be challenging, especially for high-profile vehicles.
Thessaloniki: Gale-Force Winds and Low Wind Chill
In Thessaloniki, weather conditions remain mostly clear, but strong northerly to northwesterly winds are intensifying rapidly. Winds are expected to reach 5–7 Beaufort, with gusts up to 8 Beaufort in the Thermaic Gulf.
Temperatures will range from 3 to 11 degrees Celsius, though the wind chill will make it feel significantly colder, particularly during the morning and evening hours.
Athens: Calm Skies, Cooler Temperatures
In contrast, Athens is seeing relatively calmer conditions. The weather remains mostly fair with limited cloud cover during the morning.
Winds will blow from westerly directions at 3–5 Beaufort before gradually shifting to northerly winds later in the day, strengthening to 4–5 Beaufort and locally up to 6 Beaufort in eastern parts of Attica by nightfall.
Temperatures in the capital will range between 5 and 16 degrees Celsius, with slightly lower values in northern suburbs.
Conditions Elsewhere
Across much of the country, weather conditions remain largely stable. Western Greece, the Ionian Islands, the Aegean, and Crete will see generally fair weather with increasing cloud cover later in the day and isolated light rain in southern areas.
Temperatures nationwide will remain on the low side, reaching 10–13 degrees Celsius in northern regions and up to 16–18 degrees in coastal and island areas. Local frost is expected during early morning hours in inland northern and central regions.
Brief Outlook
Cold conditions are expected to persist into the coming days, with strong winds gradually easing after Monday. Temperatures are forecast to drop further toward New Year’s Eve, bringing a more wintry feel across much of the country.
