Foteini Tricha has been named the world’s top female water polo player for 2025. This prestigious award from World Aquatics serves as a crowning achievement for Tricha and a testament to the dominance of Greek water polo.
It concludes a “dream year” in which the Greek Women’s National Team captured gold at both the World Championships in Singapore and the World Cup in China.
Tricha: Top scorer at the Singapore World Championship
Tricha, a standout for Olympiacos and a cornerstone of the “Golden” National Team, was also the top scorer at the Singapore World Championship with 25 goals.
In her own words: “Individual accolades don’t mean much to me; my focus is entirely on the gold medal,” Tricha told World Aquatics.
“Every goal is a product of the team’s system. My teammates are exceptional and find me easily. When the ball reaches me, I just focus on making the right move—if the shot is there, I take it. We played incredibly well in this tournament and truly deserved this gold. We must maintain this level because the competition is fierce.”
The shortlist for the award also included the captain of the Greek national team, Eleftheria Pleuritou.
Tricha follows in the footsteps of Alexandra Asimaki, who was named World Player of the Year in 2011, the last time Greece stood atop the world podium.
On the men’s side, Spain’s Alvaro Granados took the top honor, with Greece’s Stelios Argyropoulos-Kanakakis finishing among the top five finalists.
