The lack of Face ID on the iPhone Fold has been reported to be attributed to the device’s design complications, which won’t be appreciated by potential buyers, considering that they might have to fork over an eye-dropping $2,399 for Apple’s first foldable smartphone when it arrives alongside the iPhone 18 series next year. However, one tipster suggests that the side-mounted Touch ID sensor, which will be used in place of the TrueDepth camera, will be beneficial for two reasons, with one of them being improved ease of use, particularly for foldable form factors.
The second reason for omitting Face ID from the iPhone Fold will be cost; tipster also notes that the device will ship without an under-screen camera and instead rely on a punch-hole cutout
A Weibo tipster with the username ‘Momentary Digital’ has provided more design details surrounding the iPhone Fold, though the information published on the micro-blogging social network differs a little from what Digital Chat Station posted. In case you’re wondering, a separate rumor mentioned that Apple’s first foldable smartphone prototype sports a side-mounted Touch ID sensor instead of Face ID to achieve a thinner design, along with having a single punch-hole front-facing camera and one under-display camera.
On this occasion, we learn that the iPhone Fold will offer both improved usability and lower costs by switching to a side-mounted Touch ID sensor, a move that is expected to benefit both Apple and its consumers. Additionally, the device will not feature an under-display camera, but will ship with punch-hole cutouts on both the inner and outer panels, with the sensor positioned in the center.

As for where the front camera will be placed on the primary screen, it will be towards the right side. Interestingly, the rumor doesn’t mention the iPhone Fold’s crease-free design, but that might be because he came across an update stating that Apple was still testing the handset with Ultra-Thin Flexible Glass because it was experiencing technical challenges in eliminating that very crease.
Based on the aforementioned information, it will be the first time that Apple eliminates the notch or pill to introduce a punch-hole cutout, meaning the company is inching closer to its ambitious full-screen design. This major aesthetics revamp is reported to debut in 2027 when the iPhone 20 launches with its ‘four-sided bending design.’
