There’s plenty for audiences to choose from at the box office at this time of the year. The majority of the moviegoing public is still seeing Avatar: Fire and Ash, while smaller demographics — adult women, faith-based audiences, teenage boys, and families — have hits such as The Housemaid, David, Anaconda, and Zootopia 2 on offer. However, with so much available, the chances of a gem or two slipping through the cracks are also possible. One of the top-rated recent movies is now available to discover at home, where it has quietly been climbing the streaming charts. The movie is headlined by a major Marvel star, who’s joined by two young actors who’ve appeared in mega-budget projects in the last few years.
The film in question is Eternity, which tackles weighty themes with a light touch. Having already had a fairly successful run in theaters — it grossed over $30 million worldwide on a reported budget of $12 million — the film is now available to rent or purchase at home. According to FlixPatrol, Eternity was among the most-watched movies on the domestic PVOD charts this week, rising to as high as number three on Apple TV. The movie features Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller, and Callum Turner, and centers on an inventive sci-fi fantasy premise that evokes Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Set mainly in a pre-afterlife limbo where the recently deceased must choose where to spend “eternity” and with whom, the film unfolds like a romantic comedy in which a woman must decide between one of two equally appealing men.
‘Eternity’ Has Earned Sky-High Audience Ratings
Directed by David Freyne, the movie received positive reviews. It’s now sitting at a “certified fresh” 77% critics’ score and a “verified hot” 90% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Marrying a clever spin on the afterlife with an infectious sweet streak, Eternity is a spiritual successor to classic romantic screwball comedies that’s worthy of their company.” In his review, Collider’s Ross Bonaime wrote, “Eternity is a step in the right direction for the more ambitious comedies coming out of A24, while also having a broader appeal, which the studio has struggled with. It’s also one of the better theatrical romances to come out in a while, acting almost like a post-life Challengers, just with death instead of tennis.”
You can watch the film at home on digital, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
