A pilot traffic-enforcement program in the Attica region of Greece has recorded more than 10,000 red-light violations. The findings highlight how often risky driving occurs at intersections.
The Greek Minister of Digital Governance confirmed that this number comes from only a small part of the traffic-camera network that is currently in use.

The program includes 388 red-light cameras installed at 100 locations across the region. These units detect vehicles that pass through intersections after the light has turned red.
At the same time, authorities are also testing artificial-intelligence cameras. These systems identify drivers who use mobile phones or fail to wear seatbelts. Even so, the high number of red-light violations remains the main concern.

Digital fines and notifications to drivers
From mid-January, drivers caught running a red light will receive digital notifications through the gov.gr wallet app.
Each message will include a secure code and photo evidence. Drivers will also have the option to appeal or pay the fine online.
Nationwide expansion planned through 2026
Based on early results, the government plans to expand the program across Greece. More than 2,000 enforcement cameras are expected to operate nationwide by mid-2026.
The aim is simple: reduce dangerous driving and improve overall road-safety compliance through consistent, technology-driven monitoring.
