The best movies of 2025

It may be a new year, but we can’t close the book completely on 2025 just yet. With awards bodies set to start handing out their statuettes to last years’s best movies, Gold Derby editors offer up their own individual Top 10 lists spanning 12 months in a major movie year.

Not surprisingly, Oscar-bound titles like Sinners, One Battle After Another, Hamnet and Train Dreams are very much in the mix. Paul Thomas Anderson sprawling epic and Clint Bentley‘s elegiac drama were two titles that appeared across all three editors’ lists, and seem poised to share space among the Best Picture nominees as well.

But there were also plenty of room for smaller movies to muscle their way into our hearts. For example, did you know that a great Romanian-made Dracula hit theaters this year, ensuring that those Sinners vampires weren’t the only bloodsuckers in town? And between Jim Jarmusch‘s Father Mother Sister Brother, Bradley Cooper‘s Is This Thing On? or Jafar Panahi‘s It Was Just an Accident, while some of our favorite films weren’t box office monsters, they lingered with us all the same.
