Amorim needs to be ready for Leeds test

Ruben Amorim was reluctant to draw parallels between the footballing rivalries he is used to in Lisbon with the one that exists between Leeds United and Manchester United.

He did bring up the Europa League semi-final, first leg in Bilbao last season, which was exceptionally loud, albeit not overly hostile.

“The noise is going to be big,” he said. “But when you play for Manchester United, you need to be ready for everything.”

That suggests to me that Amorim does not really know what to expect.

It is not so such the noise. It is the intensity, the aggression, the raw emotion.

And this is not just on one side. Manchester United may historically have a bigger rivalry with Liverpool because of their shared history, but there is no softening of attitudes towards Leeds.

Amorim has already been caught out once this season in a situation he wasn’t prepared for, and that ended in acute embarrassment at League Two Grimsby Town.

Defeat at Leeds would not be on anything like the same scale, but the chances of it happening can be limited by being prepared.
