With record-high storage and memory costs, prices can change on a daily basis. At least one retailer may be cancelling orders to capitalize on the volatility. Redditor Senior_Ball_9068 claims he purchased a Corsair prebuilt gaming PC on December 31st. Frustratingly, the company voided the order before relisting the system for $800 more.
The gamer explains that he paid $3499.99 for a Vengeance a5100 configuration with 32GB of DDR5 RAM and a 2TB M.2 SSD. He later found a cancellation notice in his inbox, before noticing that the system was now listed at $4299.99. Without any explanation, Senior_Ball_9068 thinks Corsair realized the previous total was too reasonable considering rising memory prices.
Was Corsair’s cancellation legal?
Often, when there is an obvious mistake, retailers nullify orders without fear of legal recourse. However, in this case, $3500 was not an unrealistic amount to pay for a prebuilt gaming PC with similar specs. Also, it seems unlikely that any of the components would increase in value by that much overnight.
In many markets, once receiving payment, companies are legally obligated to honor a sale. Still, some online stores don’t consider the agreement final until they prepare an item to ship. Nevertheless, this behavior can damage a seller’s reputation, especially when the story receives attention.
Communication can minimize the outage over memory shortages
Critics also point out that Corsair has made no official comment on the memory shortage. Meanwhile, other prebuilt gaming PC and laptop sellers like Maingear and Framework have been more upfront. Customers were informed about changes in advance, and there are no reports of them cancelling sales.
There might be another justification for Corsair’s decision besides skyrocketing memory prices. Etailers may discover there are problems with a credit card or an address after checkout.
Spotting the outrage, a representative has recently replied to the Reddit thread. After an investigation, iSenior_Ball_9068 may still receive the Vengeance a5100 at the original price.
