A Celebration of Afro-Latino Music – The Decaturian

A night full of music, prizes, and fun. What’s not to like?

Music bingo will be in the UC Lobby today, February 24th, at 5:00 PM. This event is being hosted by the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) in celebration of Black History Month.

BSU is an organization that celebrates and embraces Black culture and history. It is a great way for Black students to connect with one another while also educating peers on Black history.

BSU regularly puts on events that range from their annual Ebony Ball to a pajama and game night.

LASO has a similar goal. It is an organization that brings attention to Hispanic and Latino history and culture. LASO’s events usually fuse music and food into a way to showcase Latin American culture.

But these organizations and their events aren’t just for students who are Black, Hispanic, or Latino. BSU and LASO’s events are open to everyone who is interested in attending and learning more about Black and Hispanic cultures.

“That’s why we welcome all sorts of students to come to our events to learn more about Latin American culture,” Miamaya Parra, the president of LASO, said.

Although this event is celebrating Black History Month, it is a collaboration between BSU and LASO.

“BSU members attend a lot of our events, [and] I attend a lot of BSU events,” Parra said. “I think it was a really good time to collab. And it also gives representation to a sector of Hispanic and Latin culture that isn’t always acknowledged. There are a lot of African Latinos who go unacknowledged as Hispanic or Latino because they don’t look traditionally Hispanic.”

The music that will be played at music bingo will be from Afro-Latino artists, hence the collaboration. Students who are Black, Hispanic, both, or neither can enjoy the music that this event has to offer.

“Music is always a good way of getting people to know one another or learn about other cultures,” Parra said.

Music bingo is a popular version of bingo, likely because the music can improve the game. Music gives people a chance to sing along or add a new song to their playlist, making it more interactive and fun.

Parra encourages students to attend music bingo and take their shot at one of the five prizes.

“It’ll be a lot of fun,” Parra said. “We have a lot of big prizes. I’m giving away a TV, AirPods, a $50 gift card, and a couple of other gift cards.”

For a chance to win one of these five prizes, attend music bingo today, February 24th, at 5:00 pm in the UC Lobby.

Until then, be sure to listen to Afro-Latino artists to ensure that you’re informed, and keep an eye out for other events organized by both BSU and LASO.

“Follow the LASO page on Instagram, follow BSU on Instagram,” Parra said. “It’s a great way to keep up with what we’re doing, and maybe you’ll see an event you’re interested in.”
