The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has tasked the electricity company, PPC, with preparing the studies needed to complete the Mesochora hydropower plant. From the 1.3 million euro budget, the studies required for the relocation of residents will be finalised.
The 161.6-megawatt (MW) capacity, under-construction reservoir and hydroelectric plant is located on the upper section of the Acheloos River. The project has been designated as of national economic importance, as it is expected to provide significant renewable energy output of 360 GWh.
Construction began in 1986, but most of the plant has been built since 2001 at a cost of over 300 million euros (500 million euros in today’s value). However, the project’s completion and commissioning were delayed by opposition from civil society and residents. The government, however, has not abandoned the project and aims to start work next year.
