After Only 7 Days, Zootopia 2 Destroyed These Superhero Movies At the Box Office

Both Marvel and DC Studios are getting their hind parts kicked at the box office this past week, and by animated animals, no less — more specifically, a fox and a bunny, Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps, respectively. Though that last tidbit would probably make Squirrel Girl a happy camper, it’s not exactly anything Kevin Feige or James Gunn expected: having to bend the knee in 2025 to Zootopia 2.

It took only seven days for Zootopia 2 to obliterate several of the top superhero movies of the year in box office earnings, setting a new Disney record for biggest worldwide launch of all-time (and the fourth-highest all-time for any animated film in history) after amassing a mind-bending $560 million globally since its Thanksgiving release. To put that into proper perspective, Captain America: Brave New World was released in February 2025, and topped out, over the course of several weeks, at roughly $415 million globally.

That’s right, folks. It took Zootopia 2 only one week to humiliate the fourth installment in the Captain America franchise, but that’s not the only superhero movie that is, for lack of a better way to put it, getting its tail kicked. The acclaimed Thunderbolts* (The New Avengers) was released in May 2025 and, to date, has earned $382.4 million in worldwide box office gains.

And then there’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a meteor of a hit for Marvel and the MCU, released in July 2025, dominating global ticket sales to the tune of $521 million in earnings — still approximately $19 million shy overall of what Zootopia 2 has done before kids have even finished their first week back to school. Ah, but there’s still one trick up the sleeve for superheroes everywhere, though not for long.

The Son of El is ready for a fight, albeit one he’s about to inevitably lose. As it stands, David Corenswet’s Superman is sitting atop a fairly tall throne with a crown that boasts a scintillating $616.7 million in worldwide box office earnings following its release in July 2025, just days ahead of Marvel’s cinematic response, The Fantastic Four: Final Steps. That means Zootopia 2 still needs to pull in just $57 million more to fly past Kal-El as if he were standing still.

Expect that to happen in a matter of days, if not hours, at the pace it’s currently at, and there’s nothing to slow that train until, potentially, the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters on Dec. 19, 2025. That is expected to reset any records set before it, but give Zootopia 2 all the roses it’s due, because toppling a resurgent DC Studios and the almighty Marvel Studios — literally both — makes it a worthy adversary and, given how outstanding the film is (hence its Certified Fresh rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes), there’s no arguing its merits.

Now, let’s see if Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow can retake the throne, in 2026, that her cousin, Superman, is about to relinquish this holiday season, and to a sly fox and hilarious bunny.
