RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) -Rapid City’s Legal and Finance Committee voted Wednesday to approve more than $44 million in Vision Funds to support a major expansion at Rapid City Regional Airport.
The committee approved the airport’s request to fund bonds for the $100 million expansion project, which will add five new gates to the terminal.
Airport officials said the expansion addresses gate crowding during busy summer months when multiple airlines arrive simultaneously.
Expansion aims to solve gate capacity issues
“We do struggle for gate space in the summer months today. A lot of the carriers want to come in all at the same time,” said Rapid City Regional Airport Executive Director Patrick Dame. “Project two gives us that gate area expansion, gives us a little bit more flexibility.”
Dame said officials hope to break ground on the expansion within 12 to 24 months.
The airport is currently completing phase one of the terminal project, which includes baggage automation and TSA expansion. That phase is already halfway complete.
The full City Council will vote on the resolution on Tuesday.
