Daniel Palmer, an applied instructor of guitar and guitar ensemble at Albion College, has released a CD of his original compositions. The self-released collection is titled “North West” and is available on all streaming platforms.
Palmer said the CD features 11 selections he considers landscapes.
“The guitar is the driving force behind each landscape, providing a foundation for the other musicians to explore and play with,” Palmer said. “The concept behind each piece was to utilize the open strings of the guitar wherever possible, creating textures that are very unique to that instrument, allowing me to play chords and create sounds that would otherwise not be possible without the use of open strings. The music is composed but heavily improvised, using the composed material as a launch point for open improvisation.”
Other musicians featured on this project are Patrick Booth (saxophone), Ben Rolston (bass), and Travis Aukerman (drums). The CD cover art work was done by Matt Taylor.
“We have all known each other for over a decade and can be heard on several recordings with other musicians,” Palmer said.
The CD was recorded at Dream Louder Music in Toledo, Ohio.
