RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) — For decades, veterans have come to the American Legion Post 289 in Riverside, to share time with their families, friends and others.
But like many such posts across the country, they’re struggling.
“I don’t think we’re super unique to other posts across the country right now in how we’re struggling, but ours is a little bit more severe on the financial side of things,” Julie Bataco, vice president of American Legion Post 289, said in an interview.
Not only is the building in desperate need of repairs, but the post is struggling with finances. Officials say the prior administration missed a number of sales tax payments.
“When you add up all the penalties and interest over the years, we’re up over $80,000,” John Michalska, the post’s finance officer, told ABC7.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for the post.
