Andy Robertson says he was not offered a new contract at Liverpool — but his departure is amicable as he wants to play more regularly.

The Scotland international announced on Thursday that he will end his nine-year spell at Anfield when his contract ends this summer.

Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham was only his seventh Premier League start of the campaign with Milos Kerkez establishing himself as Arne Slot’s first choice left-back.

“It means I don’t need to lie to everyone (about my future) so it’s a weight off my shoulders,” Robertson said.

“It’s not like I’ve knocked back a contract or anything, there was no contract on the table. It was a conversation we all had. It was a conversation of ‘okay, this is what I want to do, I want to play and I believe I’ve still got the ability to play’. I think I have showed that this season.”

The Athletic revealed on Friday that Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to sign the 32-year-old full-back as a free agent. There was strong interest from Spurs in January with Atletico Madrid having tried to buy him last summer.

“Last summer it was kind of close and I decided to stay. It was the same in January,” Robertson added.

“I will be looking to sort my future out sooner rather than later. I don’t want to be going to the World Cup with anything hanging over my head. But as of yet, there’s nothing. We’ll see where the future lies for me and my family.”

Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk wants to see the dispute over planned ticket price increases at Anfield resolved. There were protests at Saturday’s game with no flags or banners on the Kop as supporters directed chants against owner Fenway Sports Group.

“I think the fans are the heart and soul of the club,” he said.

“If they feel like this then protest is their fair right. Hopefully they come to a solution with the club. These things are far above my position as captain of the club.”
