The Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve in Tuckerton works in partnership with the N.J. Department of Environmental Protection to help communities better understand and communicate flood risks and impacts, including through MyCoast: New Jersey, a portal that offers tools for users to submit reports about flooding. At the April 11 Science Saturday, from 11 a.m. to noon on Zoom, the JCNERR’s Amanda Archer will detail the MyCoast platform.
“By integrating tide, weather and location data, MyCoast can help inform coastal decision-makers, practitioners, business owners and residents by tracking coastal change and hazards in order to support communities and the places they love,” LBIF explained. “See how community members can collect data using the MyCoast app for Long Beach Island and surrounding areas.”
Archer has served as the training and engagement coordinator at the JCNERR since 2022. Her work aims to foster resilience in New Jersey by developing innovative tools and resources, providing learning opportunities for community leaders and organizations, facilitating collaboration among sectors and advancing nature-based strategies throughout the watershed and estuary. She is a certified ecological restoration practitioner in training and serves as a managing director for the New Jersey Coastal Resilience Collaborative.
This spring’s Science Saturday lectures, some held in person and some online, focuses on local sustainability and the issues shaping our shore community. “For more than 15 years,” organizers note, “these presentations have encouraged learning and sparked action. This season, we’re making citizen science and community participation the heart of the series.”
