Aragorn to be recast in new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie, Andy Serkis says

Viggo Mortensen, who played the character in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, will not reprise the role in the new movie.

WASHINGTON — Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, will not reprise the role in an upcoming film.

Andy Serkis confirmed to ScreenRant that the role of Aragorn will be recast in “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Serkis played Gollum in the original trilogy and is starring in and directing the new installment.

“I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone,” he said in the ScreenRant interview.

The cast for “The Hunt for Gollum,” which is set to release in 2027, includes Kate Winslet, whose role has not been announced. There have been rumors that Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen will reprise their roles as Frodo and Gandalf.

In the interview, Serkis kept details about Winslet’s role and the film under wraps

“We’ve got to keep it all back,” he told ScreenRant. “I mean, look, other than, I think it’s probably common knowledge, but our film takes place between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ and it’s ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ and it is a physical hunt for the character, but also a psychological hunt for himself. So we’re just about on the launchpad now, and it’s very exciting. And yeah, it’s going to be a big ride.”

Jackson is producing the new movie,  along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the original movies.
