As four Beatles movies film simultaneously, Paul McCartney releases first new album in six years

As filming gets under way on Sam Mendes’s The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, Paul McCartney is releasing his first new album in six years. Titled The Boys of Dungeon Lane, the nostalgic work is set for release in a couple of months.

Confirming the news as well as the release date, the legendary singer-songwriter shared a post on Facebook, which read: “My new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, will be yours 29th May.”

“The album title, comes from a lyric in the track ‘Days We Left Behind’. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else?” he continued.

According to the BBC, the album – the 19th solo recording of the musician’s illustrious career – is named after a road in Speke that leads to the Mersey shore, where a young McCartney spent his afternoons bird-watching.

Described as a “collection of revealing glimpses” into “never-before shared” memories, the album is inspired by McCartney’s childhood in post-war Liverpool.

The album’s first single, ‘Days We Left Behind’, premiered on BBC Radio Merseyside and features lyrics about “smoky bars and cheap guitars”, and how “nothing can erase the days we left behind”.

“This is very much a memory song for me,” McCartney said in a press release announcing the new album. “I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else?”

Explaining the lyrics, he added: “It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool… We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”
