Aston Villa secured a commanding 3–1 victory over Bologna FC in their Europa League quarter-final first leg.
Goals from Ezri Konsa and a second-half brace by Ollie Watkins handed Unai Emery’s side a crucial advantage in Italy.
Bologna Start Strong but Miss Chances
Bologna started with intensity and threatened early through Federico Bernardeschi’s cross into the penalty area, which forced a sharp save from Emiliano Martínez.
The hosts continued to press, with Lewis Ferguson striking the crossbar from close range after connecting with Jonathan Rowe’s delivery. Bernardeschi also created openings during a strong spell for the home side.
Villa Take Control Before and After Half-Time
Villa opened the scoring just before half-time. A corner from Youri Tielemans caused confusion in the Bologna defence, allowing Konsa to head into an empty net.
The visitors extended their advantage shortly after the restart when a misplaced pass was intercepted, allowing Watkins to collect the ball and finish calmly from inside the area.
Late Drama and Clinical Finish
Bologna continued to press and created several openings in the second half. Bernardeschi hit the post from close range, while Rowe forced another strong save from Martínez.
Rowe eventually reduced the deficit in the 90th minute, cutting inside before firing into the far corner to give the home side hope.
Villa, however, restored their two-goal cushion with the final action of the match, as Watkins reacted quickly to a loose ball from a corner and converted from close range.
Match Stats Reflect Tight Contest
The result of the match belies the action on the field. Bologna registered 11 shots, with four on target, while Aston Villa had eight shots, also with four on target.
Bologna dominated possession with 58%, compared to Villa’s 42%, but the visitors proved more clinical in front of goal.
Emery Reacts Ahead of Second Leg
After the match, Emery reflected on the performance:
“Happy but getting balance in everything… it is a fantastic result.”
He also highlighted the improvement after the break:
“The result was much better than the match we played in the first half. In the second half it was completely different.”
Second Leg and Upcoming Fixtures
The second leg of the encounter will take place on April 16, 2026, at Villa Park.
Aston Villa will return to Premier League action against Nottingham Forest on April 12, while Bologna will host US Lecce in Serie A on the same day.
