Greece has moved to advance domestically developed military drone systems, awarding initial research and development contracts for three unmanned combat aerial vehicles and two related defense technologies, the Ministry of National Defense and the Hellenic Center for Defense Innovation said Wednesday.
The contracts follow field tests conducted during the military exercise “Parmenion ’25,” where three drone prototypes were evaluated and selected by the armed forces for further development. Three Greek companies signed agreements aligned with operational requirements set by the military, with additional testing planned before any system becomes a final product integrated into operational planning.
Separately, authorities approved the industrial production of a loitering munition drone developed by the armed forces’ innovation and technology center, which has already been tested by Special Warfare Command personnel.
Another contract expands the electronic warfare system Centaurus, designed to counter hostile drones and strengthen naval operations. Officials said the initiatives reflect lessons from modern battlefields, where relatively low-cost unmanned systems can deliver significant operational value, as Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said.
