WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WLIO) – To kick off the celebration of 250 years of America, The Auglaize Committee hosted a presentation of music from 1976.
One of the biggest aspects of culture is music, and this presentation focuses on music that was big in 1976.
Why that year? For one, it has been 50 years since, and this was when America celebrated the bicentennial year. By checking out how musicians created songs, how they hosted festivals based on the bicentennial, and how different genres were brought everyone a blast from the past. The presentation started with all types of 70s culture, then moved into different sub genres of rock, which was the reigning genre during the time.
“Particularly the 1970s, what’s so interesting about this is that there’s quite a lot of crossovers going on. So, it’s like rock plus. Rock plus folk, rock plus jazz, rock plus country, rock plus reggae, little bit of everything,” says Dr. Matthew Donahue, a professor in the Department of Popular Culture at BGSU.
He adds that since this era of music had crossovers of all genres, the decade is one of the most important of all music history. The Auglaize County Historical Society is holding more events in the future, so check out their Facebook page.
