Roy Lee, the producer on the long-delayed BioShock movie adaptation, has revealed that the project is still in the pipeline, although admitted it would have been made by now had other projects not been on the schedule for director Francis Lawrence, including the Hunger Games prequel.
Speaking with Collider, Lee gave hope that Lawrence will pick the BIoShock film back up after he’s finished with The Hunger Games: Sunrise. Furthermore, it seems that Netflix and Take-Two are eager to get the movie out around the same time as the next BioShock, which is in development at Cloud Chamber.
We would have gotten it made a few years back, but then other movies got in the way, with one being The Long Walk and the other being The Hunger Games prequel, which comes out this December. We’re just waiting for him to finish post-production, because he’s going to be working on it through at least September, and then jump back into it.
I know that Netflix and Take-Two are very anxious to see the movie come out because they want to have the release coincide with some of the potential new incarnations of the game.
The last time we heard about the BioShock film was back in September last year, when Lee told The Direct that the movie is going to be based on the first BioShock game, which of course takes place in the underwater metropolis of Rapture. BioShock was set to be adapted for the big screen nearly a decade ago, when Gore Verbinski was set to helm the project. However, in February 2017, he announced during a Reddit AMA that the the project was scrapped just eight weeks prior to shooting.
As for the new BioShock game, back in August last year it was revealed in a report on Bloomberg that Cloud Chamber had seen about 30% of its staff laid off. As a result, BioShock 4 (or whatever it ends up being called) has been pushed back; it was originally set to arrive in late 2026/early 2027.
