Bologna beat Roma in Europa League ‘derby’ to reach quarter-finals – Sports

Bologna beat AS Roma 4-3 after extra
time in the capital on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of
the Europa League.

With the Italian ‘derby’ tie evenly balanced after last week’s
1-1 draw in the first leg in Bologna, Jonathan Rowe gave the
visitors the lead in the middle of the first half only for
Roma’s Evan N’Dicka to equalise shortly after.

Bologna’s Federico Bernardeschi converted a penalty just before
the break and and Santiago Castro put them 3-1 up in the 55th
minute.

Roma, who were among the favourites to win the trophy, came back
again though with a packed Stadio Olimpico cheering them on,
with Donyell Malen scoring a spot kick and Lorenzo Pellegrini
finding the net to force extra time.

But Nicolo Cambiaghi stunned the Roma faithful in the 111th
minute, sliding the ball home in off the post from a tight angle
at the end of a slick move to set up a clash with former
European champions Aston Villa in the last eight.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, beat Rakow Czestochowa 2-1 in Poland to
progress to the quarter-finals of the Conference League 4-2 on
aggregate.

Bologna and Fiorentina, who face Crystal Palace in the next
round, are Italy’s only survivors in European competition this
season after the nation’s last remaining team in the Champions
League, Atalanta, lost 4-1 at Bayern Munich on Wednesday to
crash out 10-2 on aggregate
