Journey Among Men, also known as J.A.M, is a WNC Cherokee-based band that emerged in 2023.

While they are known for their relatable lyrics, gritty instrumentation, catchy melodies and live performances, there is one thing that stands out: J.A.M says they are the first-ever indigenous rock group to form out of the East Coast.

Since their debut in 2023, the band has gained a loyal following in and around the Cherokee area and in the rest of the Great Smoky Mountains region.

J.A.M strives to be more than just a band.

“J.A.M is not just a band. We are a movement of people who represent the culture found within the music we create. The group strives to bring awareness to human condition, specifically from the point of view of the modern American Indian, presented to all people,” Drew Clingan, frontman for J.A.M, said.

Bands like J.A.M are an outlet for the community. Especially having a band from WNC be the first of its kind to come out of the East Coast, many fans feel a sense of pride due to seeing their culture be laid out in front of the public in such a new, bright and unique way.

“One of the most meaningful experiences has been seeing how many people come together at our shows. People from all backgrounds are dedicating themselves to enjoying our music and sharing in the success of J.A.M And that is cherished by the group,” Clingman said.

When going to any of their shows, just looking into the crowd you can see all kinds of people from different walks of life, different cultures and experiences.

The band holds a lot of honor in what they do and what they have accomplished with storytelling and messaging in their songs.

“Overall, our essential goal is found within the message we represent. However, we would be honored to see ourselves receive continued honor and credit as being the first and only Indigenous rock group on the East Coast. This is something we are proud to be,” Clingman said.

The music scene in WNC is bright, lively and more importantly, always growing. It appears every year there are several more bands that appear. People thrive on music, and they especially thrive on music that showcases their own culture and experiences.

J.A.M released their second album “Conceived” early this year. The album is available on most music streaming services.
