Recent games have shown improvement from Bronny James, and he confirmed that he’s feeling a lot more comfortable in the NBA right now. The Los Angeles Lakers clearly drafted Bronny to appease his father LeBron James and to have the unique story of a father/son duo on their team. However, lackluster results so far have put some skepticism towards James’ NBA future.
Bronny shared the following insight on feeling more comfortable after some NBA playing time and more G-League games over the past week:
“I’ve gotten more and more reps being comfortable shooting behind the NBA line,” Bronny said to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “Gotten more and more comfortable for me to just shoot it without thinking. Nothing much to it but just getting reps in and keeping at it and keeping working on my game.”
The heart issue to shorten James’ college career doesn’t get talked about enough when looking at his progress. Bronny may not be a top prospect, but the slow progress back from a long time away from the court would harm any young talent. The Lakers have benefited from sending James down to the G-League to get more reps and minutes to feel comfortable on the court again.
How Bronny James Has Quietly Improved
The Lakers contending means that James will barely get playing time in favor of the better players on the competitive roster. Bronny playing more frequently for the South Bay Lakers G-League team proves his skill set can translate to effective numbers with more minutes.
42% shooting from three-point range is pivotal since James must become a strong NBA shooter to remain in the league and get more playing time. Lakers head coach JJ Redick has trusted Bronny to get limited playing time over the past two games due to his improvements in the G-League.
The combined stats for these two games showed Bronny scoring 7 points on 50% shooting over 17 total minutes. Redick typically just plays the younger James in one-sided games, but he has started to play more with LeBron. The Lakers potentially clinching the third seed with a few games left could see Bronny getting more minutes to close the season with LeBron and Luka Doncic resting.
Does Bronny James Have A Path To NBA Success
The biggest question about Bronny is if he can maintain an NBA roster spot after LeBron retires. Teams must truly believe in James if they play him without having his father on the roster as an iconic figure.
Bronny’s improved shooting in the G-League is a great sign for the future, but he must start putting together more impressive moments on the NBA court. A limited player must play strong defense, and that will be James’ best path towards entering a rotation.
The Lakers and any other team will expect Bronny to hit a couple of three-pointers and play strong defense during his minutes. James’ comments about feeling comfortable in the NBA could present a chance for better success next season. Austin Reaves and LeBron both entering free agency should see the Lakers roster changing. Bronny could get more minutes or switch teams with LeBron depending on how things play out.
