The Detroit Pistons now have a clearer — though still evolving — timeline for their franchise star.
Cade Cunningham is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks after being diagnosed with a mild collapsed lung, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who shared additional details during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up.
While the initial diagnosis delivered a major shock, the latest reporting offers a more measured outlook — one that keeps the door open for a postseason return.
Weeks-Long Absence, But Timeline Fluid
Cunningham’s recovery timeline is beginning to take shape, though uncertainty remains.
“It’s going to be at least a pair of weeks,” Charania said. “The Pistons are not quite sure exactly how long it could be.”
The process will depend heavily on how Cunningham responds to treatment in the coming days, with Detroit’s medical staff continuing to evaluate next steps.
“This is a situation now, an injury that he’s going to be fighting, rehabbing,” Charania added. “They’re going to work together to get more information.”
Best-Case Scenario Points to Playoff Return
Despite the extended absence, there is cautious optimism within the organization.
“A best-case scenario here is that Cade Cunningham is going to be able to come back for the playoffs,” Charania said. “Whether that’s at the start of the playoffs or a little bit into the playoffs.”

“The thing is, there’s just some uncertainty as far as next steps, treatment — what that looks like,” Charania added. “The good news is that it is a mild version of this, but it is something that will be keeping him out for a period of weeks.”
