Bears quarterback Caleb Williams
NFL quarterback Caleb Williams had a great football season, but he found himself on the bad side of basketball social media discourse last night. Williams took part in a lesser-known NBA All-Star Weekend event on Friday night. Six names took part in a celebrity three-point shooting contest featuring athletes, retired players and influencers. Williams joined Druski, Richard Jefferson, PlaqueBoyMax, Nigel Sylvester, and Jared McCain in the celebrity field.
However, the athletic Williams finished in last place of the first round and failed to make the finals with the following scores:
Jared McCain: 11
PlaqueBoyMax: 9
Richard Jefferson: 7
Nigel Sylvester: 7
Druski: 5
Caleb Williams: 4
If you’re wondering why active Oklahoma City Thunder NBA player McCain was involved in a celebrity event, there is no valid answer to explain it. The NBA put together this event as a secondary form of entertainment for fans attending the smaller All-Star events.
Williams shockingly finished in last place, despite talking up his basketball ability heading into the event. The quarterback somehow finished behind comedic online personality Druski. McCain defeated streamer PlaqueBoyMax in the finals 12-10 to leave as the winner.
Caleb Williams Jokingly Retired From Basketball
The fallout of the event saw Williams getting ahead of the curve and knowing that he would get roasted on social media. Chicago Bears fans defended Williams since this is his second sport, but other fans weren’t as forgiving. Williams responded by posting a hilarious caption making it clear he’s done with basketball.
“Hanging them up after tn😂😂,” Williams shared on Instagram story about his performance. Betting prop sites listed Williams with some of the higher projections, and Druski was projected to finish in last place. The two battled it out for the worst position and had no chance of making the finals.
This contest was different from the official NBA three-point contest since the celebrities only had fifteen three-point attempts in each round. Williams had a couple of air balls to make the performance even more embarrassing for a top athlete.
Why Wasn’t Williams In Celebrity Game?
Many wondered why Williams, Druski, and some other names here weren’t involved in the Celebrity All-Star Game. Williams is coming off a great NFL postseason run where he became a household name to the average sports fan and could have easily boosted the attention for ESPN’s celebrity exhibition.
Druski also holds strong name value as one of the most popular streamers on the internet. The NFL and various other top brands have worked with him to bring more attention to their events. Most NBA fans had no idea these two were even involved in anything NBA related this weekend since this wasn’t even televised.
However, Williams shooting so poorly could have led to more embarrassing moments on a bigger stage of an ESPN televised game. The three-point contest was only filmed by live fans and streamed by other competitors sees a smaller audience aware of this. Bears fans are lucky that Williams is significantly better on the football field.
