California man explains why you need a PS4 in 2026 and says it’s the best deal in gaming

A man has stated his case for why you should buy a PlayStation 4, or PS4, in 2026, and he made some very good points.

The PlayStation 4 was launched as a successor to the PS3 all the way back in 2013.

Of course, the console was a huge hit with more than 100 million units sold before it was replaced by the PS5 in 2020.

But just because it’s not the latest PlayStation console on the market, it doesn’t mean it’s past it – as YouTube content creator and tech-lover Austin Evans recently explained.

There’s still plenty to like about the PS4 in 2026

Sony introduced the first-ever PlayStation console in 1994, and today it’s the best-selling home console brand in the world.

Each new console comes with a bunch of updates and improvements, so you might think it’s not worth going for one of the older models.

But Austin Evans reckons that the PS4 is still a remarkably good buy in 2026.

“I actually think that this is one of the best values in gaming today as it’s actually capable of doing a lot more than I thought,” he said.

He kicked off by explaining that new consoles, like the PS5, will cost you around $550 new or $350 used, whereas you can pick up a PS4 for as little as $70.

The PS4 is kind of the sweet spot when it comes to pricing, with older PS1 and PS2 consoles now being classed as collectibles and selling for higher prices.

But it’s not just the price that makes the PS4 a tempting purchase in 2026.

Despite its age, the PS4 is still compatible with some big games, including the latest Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Marvel Rivals.

Austin decided to put up a PS4 against a PS5 and played COD Black Ops 7 to see how they compared.

It should come as little surprise to learn that the PS5 loaded up a lot more quickly and played more smoothly, but said there wasn’t really a ‘dramatic difference’ in how the game looked.

And it was a similar story while playing Fortnite, with the PS4 being a little slower but still fine for casual gamers.

But there are some things to be aware of

Of course, there are some drawbacks to buying an older PlayStation over a new one.

Austin pointed out that support for the PlayStation 4 is starting to shut down, with the Genshin Impact server set to be discontinued in April and PUGB servers winding down late last year.

Meanwhile, game makers aren’t launching new titles on the PS4, so if you’re the sort of person who likes to get their hands on new releases, then an old console probably isn’t for you, and you might be better off looking for a used PS5 instead

However, even taking into consideration those faults, Austin reckons the PS4 still has enough gaming life left in it that it can be very worthwhile picking one up for cheap.

And if nothing else, you’ll get a sweet nostalgia hit playing some of those older titles.
