Cuba is on edge following the U.S. military strikes on Venezuela and the capture of dictator Nicolás Maduro. Because they relied on Venezuelan oil, President Donald Trump predicted the Communist Cuban government would soon fall, but it may not be that straightforward.
Roughly 1,300 miles from Venezuela and just 90 miles from Florida, Cuba has such deep ties to Venezuela that 32 members of its armed forces were killed during Operation Absolute Resolve. The Cuban government declared Monday and Tuesday official days of mourning. Before Maduro’s capture, Venezuela supplied Cuba with about 30,000 barrels of oil per day, according to multiple estimates.
“Cuba now has no income. They got all their income from Venezuela, from the Venezuelan oil,” Trump said Sunday.
With Maduro ousted and his vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, now interim president, it’s not yet clear how that supply line will change. With Russia and China in Havana’s corner, some in Washington doubt a destabilized Venezuela will be the thing to topple the Cuban regime.
