Google’s $15 Billion Bet On India’s AI Future

When Google announced its $15 billion investment in India on October 14—the company’s largest commitment to the subcontinent to date—it pointed to more than just a corporate expansion. It marked a turning point in the global AI race, showing that emerging markets are no longer just using technology—they’re helping to shape its future. The cornerstone of this investment is an artificial intelligence hub in the port city of Visakhapatnam. Over five years, Google announced it will construct a gigawatt-scale data center campus, set up an international subsea cable gateway, and develop clean-energy infrastructure—rolling out what the company calls its “full AI stack.” India’s digital transformation has accelerated over the past decade, driven by government programs like Digital India and a...

Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq march higher as vote lifts hopes for end to US shutdown

Tech stocks led the market higher at the opening bell on Monday after the Senate took a big step toward ending the record-breaking government shutdown that has clouded the picture of the economy. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) surged over 1.5%, while the S&P 500 (^GSPC) and Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed by around 1% and 0.5%, respectively. Markets have turned upbeat amid optimism that the 39-day US shutdown could soon come to an end, after a weekend of dealmaking in Washington. A new bill was released late Sunday and quickly advanced in a key Senate procedural vote, after enough Democrats joined with Republicans to avoid a filibuster. The prolonged shutdown has taken a toll on consumer confidence and the overall economy, with consumer sentiment dropping to j...

Marblehead finance director: ‘I just don’t think it’s feasible’ to avoid override

All town departments in Marblehead are being instructed to create level-funded budgets with no additional spending for fiscal year 2027, according to Finance Director Aleesha Benjamin at a Nov. 3 meeting.  That’s despite contractually obligated 3% raises for many town employees and rising utility, health insurance, trash and other costs. In addition, Finance Director Aleesha Benjamin is projecting town revenues will drop by $514,462 in FY27 and she is predicting $5 million in free cash (money left over from the previous year), down from $7 million last year. Finance Committee Chair Alec Goolsby released this projected budget timeline at a Nov. 3 meeting.  “In order to balance (the budget) — which we have to balance, right? — there are going to be reductions in budgets,” Finance Co...

Trump floats $2,000 tariff ‘dividend’ checks with SCOTUS fate in limbo

Presdent Trump has said most Americans can expect to get a "dividend" from tariffs of $2,000 or more, as the levies generate a surge in revenue. That payoff could come in the form of the tax cuts laid out in the economic policy bill passed earlier in 2025, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested. On Sunday, Trump took to social media to say: "A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone," in a post that began: "People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS!" Speaking to ABC later, Bessent stressed he hadn’t talked to the president but speculated the $2,000 dividend "could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president’s agenda." The comments follow Trump's back and forth with reporters on Thursday in the Oval O...
