Trump says tariffs will bring $2,000 ‘dividend’ for Americans, with SCOTUS fate in limbo

Presdent Trump has said most Americans can expect to get a "dividend" from tariffs of $2,000 or more, as the levies generate a surge in revenue. That payoff could come in the form of the tax cuts laid out in the economic policy bill passed earlier in 2025, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested. On Sunday, Trump took to social media to say: "A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone," in a post that began: "People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS!" Speaking to ABC later, Bessent stressed he hadn’t talked to the president but speculated the $2,000 dividend "could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president’s agenda." The comments follow Trump's back and forth with reporters on Thursday in the Oval O...

Mobilising Predictable Finance and Technology: A COP30 Priority

Image Source: Getty Images This article is part of the essay series: "Expectations from COP30" The Paris Agreement’s vision hinges on effective support to developing countries through climate finance and technology transfer, as enshrined in Articles 9 and 10. Yet, a glaring implementation gap persists between lofty pledges and delivered support. Developed nations’ promise to mobilise US$100 billion annually by 2020 was not met, and now the goal has tripled to US$300 billion annually by 2035. This ā€œbroken political compactā€ has eroded trust. Without sufficient, predictable funding, developing countries like India are forced to divert domestic resources to climate action, straining their capacities. India’s stance heading into COP30 emphasises that climate finance must be...

What to watch this week

After another jam-packed week of news and earnings, the earnings and economic calendar suggests a tamer five-day stretch awaits investors in the week ahead. Tech stocks this past week had one of their worst stretches of the year, with declines in Palantir (PLTR) and Nvidia (NVDA) leading the tech-heavy Nasdaq to a 3% decline. The index posted its worst week since "Liberation Day," despite staging a late-session comeback on Friday. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) fell 1.7% for the week, and the Dow (^DJI) lost closer to 1.3%. A weekend Senate vote lifted optimism for an end to the US government shutdown, which officially became the longest on record last week and is poised to extend into a sixth week. While the stoppage continues to crimp US government data releases, private industry sources...

High-Yield Savings Rates Today

Pay attention to restrictions that sometimes come with HYSAs. For example, some savings accounts limit the number of withdrawals and transactions you can complete in a month. Others might require a minimum deposit to open an account or have limits on your APY based on your balance.Ā How traditional savings accounts workTraditional savings accounts work the same as HYSAs. However, unlike high-yield accounts that are often found online with no brick-and-mortar branches, traditional savings accounts are usually held at banks that have physical branches.Ā In some cases, you can get above-average yields with more traditional accounts held at local credit unions and community banks with physical locations, but often the best savings rates are found with online-only accounts.Ā Traditional savings ac...
