The Movie Guru: ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ a love letter to fans, while ‘Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice’ entertaining but silly

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (in theaters) Super Mario fans are getting a return ticket to their favorite galaxy. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is once again designed as a love letter to fans, jam-packed with beloved characters, references, sights and music. The sequel expands the love even further, bringing in other Nintendo characters and references from other classic games. The plot gets too overstuffed at times trying to fit it all in, and non-fans will be completely lost. But for people who love the games, and loved the first movie, it’s definitely a galactic journey worth taking. The movie starts soon after the first movie, with Bowser (Jack Black) in tiny jail and Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) now at home in the Mushroom Kingdom. Things get shaken up when Bow...

Five Easter movies that aren’t necessarily about Jesus Christ

The “Christmas movie” may be a genre, a programming event, a family tradition, but what about the “Easter movie”?  Is there such a thing? In a literal sense, of course: “The Passion of the Christ,” “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” Zeffirelli’s series “Jesus of Nazareth” and maybe someday, “The Chosen.” But as we all know — and even argue about (q.v. “Die Hard”), there’s more to a “Christmas movie” than the Nativity. Christmas is a cultural and social experience of weather, family harmony (and tension), peace on earth and goodwill to men, and movies reflect this. After all, the genre’s most popular entries don’t mention the Nativity or Santa Claus at all: not “A Christmas Carol” (nor Dickens’ novel), not even “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Is there an Easter equivalent? Sort of, yes — back in the ...

‘Ring the alarm! Wake up! Be human!’: Aurora and Tom Rowlands on their new dance-pop duo Tomora | Music

The two members of Tomora are contemplating their forthcoming debut live shows, a slate that includes an attention-grabbing slot at this month’s Coachella festival. “We’re still kind of working it out, and I’m getting a bit, ‘Oh my God, what’s going on?’” worries Tom Rowlands, best known as one half of Grammy-winning banger merchants the Chemical Brothers, and now one half of Tomora. Rowlands’ mindset, however, contrasts heavily with that of Aurora, his new musical partner.“I don’t have any stress in my being,” the Norwegian singer-songwriter and pop experimentalist says cheerily, sitting on the floor of the duo’s north London label office with her shoes off. “I’m always like: it’s fine,” she shrugs. “Yes, the house is on fire, but we’ll work it out.”On Tomora’s debut album, Come Closer, t...

Midweek music muster   – Illinois Times, the capital city’s weekly source of news, politics, arts, entertainment, culture

Hello everyone to the month of April and all the music therein. We missed making an April Fool’s Day issue by one day, so no fooling, we’re going to stick to the truth as we see it and report on the happenings going on this Easter weekend and beyond.  Oh boy, do I remember a Now Playing column from several years ago when Illinois Times did come out on the first of April so I was able to romp through tomfoolery such as announcing Recycled Records was moving to White Oaks Mall and other numbskull nonsense. Mark Kessler said he received many calls that day in disbelief. All I could do was be in disbelief that anyone thought it was anything but an April Fool’s prank. Now we have no Recycled Records and no Mark, but we do have a Dumb Records downtown and at the mall.  With a busy Easter w...
