The Game Awards Jury Once Again Filled With Non-Gaming Media Outlets

Sadly, this status quo remains for this year's TGA, with the 90/10 split still in place and over 20% of the jury once again made up of corporate news magazines and websites, raising the question of what qualifies them to judge the best video game. The list of such publications includes The New York Times, NPR, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone, Pride.com, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, Metro, The Mirror, Wired, Variety, The Times, Het Nieuwsblad, Folha De S.Paulo, Le Devoir, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, ETC, La Repubblica, Corriere della Sera, Die Zeit, and BFM TV – a mix of outlets both mainstream and obscure that share one common trait: video games are not their primary focus.Feel free to check out the full list of 2025's TGA jurors over on the event's official website. 5 Trippy Studio Ghibli Movies That Make Less Sense Than Neon Genesis Evangelion

Among anime movies and shows, Neon Genesis Evangelion has a wild reputation for confusion. Giant mechs, emotionally burnt-out teenagers, religious symbols scattered everywhere, and a finale that feels like a surreal therapy session in space all contribute to that image. Studio Ghibli often operates in a different kind of confusion. The films usually appear soft and welcoming on the surface, filled with comforting music and warm backgrounds. However, beneath that surface, the logic of the worlds can feel dreamlike and hard to pin down. Magic exists without a detailed explanation, and characters accept impossible events with calm faces, as if living inside a beautiful fever dream. Certain Ghibli titles, like Spirited Away and Pom Poko, twist reality so casually that even the tangled symbo...

For Good’ movie review by a ‘Wicked’ Act II hater

I have always been honest about my opinions on the stage version of “Wicked”: the show is too top-heavy, making for an anticlimactic second act. The latter half never feels like it reaches the heights of its first act. So when Universal originally announced the “Wicked” films would be split into two parts, I was incredibly worried. While separating them gives the first part (act one) its moment to truly shine, making for debatably the greatest musical adaptation of all time, I was worried it would make the story flaws of the second act stand out all the more. As much as my love for “Wicked: Part One” made me believe they could pull from the book and adjust some of the issues in act two, unfortunately, I found myself, again, thinking the second half was lackluster. Don’t get me wrong, I ...

John Waters still going to extremes as he brings new show to Ann Arbor

For a guy known for going to extremes, there are still some lines of decency John Waters is not willing to cross.Waters, the transgressive filmmaker whose trash masterpieces (trash-terpieces?) "Pink Flamingos" and "Desperate Living" scandalized cinemas in the 1970s, has been gleefully pushing boundaries for more than 50 years. And he's shown no signs of slowing down. In recent years he's acted, written books, done spoken word projects — his latest holiday single, "Happy Birthday Jesus," a cover of a 1950s novelty single by Little Cindy, was released earlier this month — and he regularly tours. Baltimore's favorite son will be at Ann Arbor's Michigan Theatre on Saturday to perform his latest show, "Going to Extremes," in which he'll try to make sense of a world that has gone mad, even by his...
