Eurogamer’s 2/5 Arc Raiders Review Splits the Gaming Community

From Clair Obscur and Balatro to Undertale and Stardew Valley – the history of gaming knows countless examples of titles that appeared seemingly out of nowhere and went on to become massive successes and certified hood classics. The latest example one could put into this category is undeniably Embark Studios' ARC Raiders, an extraction shooter that could. In less than two weeks, ARC has seemingly captured the attention of the entire gaming community, earning solid 8-9/10 review scores, attracting over 462,000 players on Steam alone at its peak, and even helping improve Unreal Engine 5's reputation by proving that most of the performance issues many have come to associate with it come from developers' implementation of UE5 rather than the engine itself. That's why many were surprised to see on...

Cult classics defined by movies old, new

Many have heard the term “cult classic,” but few could clearly define it. When it comes to movies, a cult classic is one that builds an almost obsessive following with fans who can recite every line, know every scene and never tire of watching it. These films often feature experimental storytelling, science-fiction elements or other qualities that set them apart from mainstream cinema. This is helpful for the other part of cult classics that require the movies to be rejected from society in some way. As science fiction movies are not often universally loved, this helps them become classics more than traditional movies. Those interested in cult classics believe they understand the movie more than most people, which makes the...

New film club gives Iowa State students a space to slow down and talk movies – Iowa State Daily

The newly formed Film Enthusiasts Club (FEC) at Iowa State University was born from a shared love of movies, friendship and a simple idea: to bring people together through film. It started last year at a screening of Parasite at Cyclone Cinema. Stella Lovell, a senior in civil engineering, went with her friend Olivia Wall, a sophomore in biology. In the audience, they spotted Dylan Zborowski, a senior in chemical engineering they barely knew. Lovell and Wall asked him to sit with them, and something clicked. “Last year, the Student Union Board’s Cyclone Cinema screened the film Parasite, and my friend (and vice president) Olivia decided to attend because we were both really passionate about film,” Lovell said. “At the screening, we saw that Dylan was also there. At this point in the year, ...

Ninja Gaiden 4 Review – Gaming Respawn

Ninja Gaiden. I am a fan of the series. I may not be considered a “true fan” by the standards of the more hardcore fanbase who have played the original NES titles and all the newer 3D titles on “yeah, beat my ass, daddy” difficulty, but I still enjoy the games. It’s been 13 years since we had a Ninja Gaiden game with the release of Ninja Gaiden 3 (12 years since the release of the superior Razor’s Edge edition), and since then…nothing. And I’m not counting 2014’s Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, which was a rather mid spin-off and not a true Ninja Gaiden game. But now in 2025, we got not one, not two, but THREE releases for the Ninja Gaiden series. First was Ninja Gaiden II Black, a remastered/definitive version of the original Ninja Gaiden II, followed by the 2D sidescroller Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound...

This Week in History: A look at movie reviews from the Orange Bubble

“Dick Powell scores pretty high with the dames, we are told, but he gives us something of a pain in the neck. Quite otherwise with Josephine Hutchinson,” reads a 1934 column in The Daily Princetonian.  That year, critics from the ‘Prince’ had headed to the corner of Nassau and Vandeventer to review “Happiness Ahead,” directed by Mervyn LeRoy of “The Wizard of Oz” fame. Despite its irritating leading man, the ‘Prince’ insisted that Princeton students watch the film on the Garden Theatre’s single screen if only to listen to three featured songs. The ‘Prince’ reviewed every film on the Garden’s marquee that week, as well as additional screenings at the since-shuttered Arcade Theatre.  Movie critics? At the ‘Prince’? In an age without Letterb...

Red Oaks Music has set a clear pathway for the coming months, anchored by two major milestones: the release of their future debut EP and targeted touring with influential peers. The primary goal is musical self-sufficiency.  As Lane Whiddon explains, the release of the  EP will allow them to achieve their ultimate objective on stage. “Hopefully, we get some big momentum rolling and we get to the point where our sets are mainly our music and a few cover songs rather than mainly cover songs and a few originals,” he states.
