Massively Overthinking: So how panicked are we about the state of the games industry?

This past week, games industry royalty Brenda and John Romero spoke to GIbiz in an interview that honestly set my heart pounding – and not in a good way. “I feel like the industry’s in a really horrible place,” Brenda Romero said as the duo spoke about the industry’s total lack of funding, the dismal state of AI nonsense, and studios being closed even when games are wildly successful. “I mean, we were there in the ’80s for the crash, and this is definitely crashier.” If the Romeros are worried, I’m worried. Well, I was already worried. But now I’m extra nervous that even they don’t see a clear path through it. How much of the current industry is just ending up in the digital equivalent of a landfill in Alamogordo? So let’s talk about it for this week’s Massively Overthinking. How panicked ...

Charlie Day, Who Plays Luigi In The Mario Movies, Shouts Out Alleged United Healthcare CEO Killer Luigi Mangione

We live in times that, frankly, could stand to be a little more precedented. Nary a week passes without some ridiculous new thing happening, and it’s hard not to be numb to it all. “Yep, seems about right” has become my default response to each and every barrage of horrors that regularly screams from my screen. But occasionally, a sequence of events will pierce my solid-steel Koopa shell of disaffection and make me go “Huh.” This is one of those moments.During an appearance on the Tintoria podcast as part of the press tour for the newly released, notably kid-friendly Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Charlie Day was asked his “favorite Luigi in recent American history.”“Well, me, first of all,” Day replied. And then, without missing a beat: “Luigi Mangione, number two.” His costars, Anya Taylor-Jo...

8 Near-Perfect 20th Century War Movies That No One Remembers Today

War, sadly, has always been an integral part of human history. Needless to say, the 20th century was no exception—in fact, it was the century with the most war-related deaths in recorded history. As a result, the war movie genre was one of the most popular and prolific over the course of those 100 years. Sometimes used for propaganda, sometimes just for entertainment, and often as a healthy way to process the grief and trauma caused by the actual conflicts that plagued this chapter of human history, several war movies are among the very best films of all time. But for every Casablanca and every Schindler's List, there's a dozen other war masterpieces that end up slipping under most people's radars, or see success at first but eventually fade slowly into oblivion. Of course,...

A former GameStop exec thought building its Steam competitor would be his ‘forever job,’ but the retailer bet the house on digital distribution being ‘a passing phase’

Before a career second act at Nightdive Studios, the recently-retired Larry Kuperman's big project was Impulse. It was to be GameStop's answer to Steam, but it went the way of the dodo in 2014. Kuperman went into his personal history building up Impulse's catalogue when we spoke at this year's Game Developers Conference.Kuperman came to the games industry about halfway through his professional career, with both his story and that of Impulse beginning at Stardock, a software company that was branching out into games. Stardock's management was thinking in terms of digital distribution early—Kuperman started in 2001—and the company was laying the groundwork for its own service."We reserved the rights to electronically sell the game," Kuperman recalled of his first game with Stardock, econom...

East Boston’s ZUMIX empowers youth through music

Inside the old Engine 40 firehouse in East Boston, kids run a radio station, practice instruments, and learn songwriting and technical skills. The historic building houses ZUMIX. A nonprofit that empowers youth through music and the creative arts. The organization was built with huge ambitions that had modest beginnings. Co-founder Madeleine Steczynski explained."The beginnings … really were in response to the epidemic of gang violence in the late '80s and the very early '90s," she said.During the summer of 1991, the program was taught out of her East Boston apartment. Eighteen kids learned about songwriting.Nearly 35 years later, program director Corey Depina said their offerings are vast and varied."Magic happens here at ZUMIX," Depina said.
