California tribes gather to combat encroachment of prediction markets — CDC Gaming

Fresh off Fanatics’s launching its sports betting prediction market in California and other states this month, the state’s tribal leaders are gathering through Thursday in San Diego to discuss their counter strategy, including working with state officials for a crackdown and even considering going into the business themselves if it can’t be defeated in court or legislatively. James Siva, chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association, appeared Wednesday on a webinar hosted by the Indian Gaming Association, the organization that continues to rally against prediction markets, arguing it’s illegal, infringes on tribal sovereignty, and robs them and the state of revenue. Prediction market operators maintain they’re protected under the federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission ...

10 Movies About Why Monopolies Are Bad, for No Particular Reason

Start spreading the news, the movie industry’s in trouble today. Or maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life. Reject paraphrasing Frank Sinatra, and embrace quoting Casablanca, which just so happens to be a Warner Bros. production, and if you’ve been following the news that’s being spread, you might've heard about a certain planned merger that could result in… …okay, not quite a monopoly. But something closer to a monopoly than what currently exists, and in a world where plenty of companies and distributors have already been bought up and merged, it’s a bit scary from a consumer’s perspective. If you're reading this, you're probably a consumer. And if you consume movies, you’ve probably seen a fair few of them that look at mega-powerful companies and/...

5 Master System Games That Defined the 1980s

Sega launched the Master System in the mid-’80s to give Nintendo’s NES some competition. While it came out with newer and better hardware than Nintendo’s box, it failed to match it in sales, partially because of Nintendo’s ironclad licensing policies that kept most games exclusive to the NES. Still, Sega was able to create a few hits itself, while also bringing in some heavy-hitters from the arcades. Sure, the Master System didn’t create the culture like the NES, but the system still had several bangers that shaped the future of video games. Unfortunately, we’d have to wait for the ’90s for Sega to really hit its groove as tastemakers with Sonic. Here are the five Master System games that helped define the ’80s. 5) Double Dragon If Double Dragon had launched on the Master Sy...

Like It Or Not, The Odyssey’s FOMO Strategy Is Good For Movies

The next phase of The Odyssey's marketing is about to kick off. Christopher Nolan's next film will reportedly unveil its first full-length trailer alongside screenings of Avatar: Fire & Ash when it releases next Friday, December 19 – but some people will get an even longer look a full week early. A special, six-minute prologue to The Odyssey will play before the IMAX 70mm re-releases of Sinners and One Battle After Another, which will return to theaters this Friday. This is just the latest move in a campaign that's leaned into exclusivity to generate hype. At a time when most trailers drop online and aim for maximum virality, The Odyssey's teaser trailer, released with Jurassic World Rebirth in July, debuted exclusively in theaters. The footage has since leaked online, but Universal...

Legally blind pianist brings music to life in ‘Dwight Christmas’ at Roxy’s Downtown

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A legally blind pianist is making the music look easy in “Dwight Christmas,” the holiday show now open at Roxy’s Downtown.Ashlee Thao serves as pianist for the original musical comedy that features Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower at the White House. When Thao first received the call about the show, she learned it would be similar to “White Christmas.”“As a kid, I really enjoyed watching the stuff from White Christmas,” Thao said. “I was like, ‘Okay, I think I might actually be familiar enough with the musical numbers to figure out my way around this and enjoy it.’”Thao received the music ahead of time through music XML, a technology that has made musical scores more accessible.“This stuff used to really only be accessible to a few people,” she said. “I think it only start...

The only CRPG using D&D’s original setting is finally on Steam, with fan patches and quality-of-life fixes pre-installed

The US edition of PC Gamer magazine liked The Temple of Elemental Evil enough to award it a respectable 79% in 2003, but we still had more than a few monster-sized bones to pick with Troika's D&D RPG: NPC companions silently loading themselves up with so much worthless loot they become encumbered by it; atrocious pathfinding; and numerous other obvious bugs and avoidable snags bringing down an otherwise promising adventure. This matched my own experience with the game back then. The enticing promise of a full and faithful digital recreation of D&D's 3.5 ruleset—and a chance to throw magic missiles somewhere other than the Sword Coast thanks to the game's use of the Greyhawk setting—was brought down by frustrating technical issues and odd design choices.I was never quite sure if I wa...

Meadows Music Theatre makes a comeback – NBC Connecticut

If you have great memories of going to concerts at The Meadows in Hartford, get ready to go back in time. The Xfinity Theatre has rebranded itself as the Meadows Music Theatre. It's not clear why the venue, which is owned by Live Nation, went back to it's original name. The venue's website and some of its social media accounts have been updated to reflect the return to the Meadows Music Theatre. Along with the rebrand announcement, the venue announced two shows already scheduled for next year. MGK is scheduled to play on June 6, 2026, and Riley Green is on the calendar to perform on Aug. 14, 2026. Source link
