Skip the Greek Isles and Go to Costa Navarino Instead

First-time visitors to Greece tend to have two end-all, be-all destinations in mind: Athens and the islands. The capital is essential, and the idyllic islands are unimpeachable — in theory. Incredible as the Greek isles are, many are bogged down by throngs of tourists wielding selfie sticks as far as the eye can see. That’s especially true of the locales most likely on your list: Santorini and Mykonos. Expect a healthy dose of Instagram versus reality as you squeeze through narrow alleys for the same whitewashed-building, crystalline-water views as everyone else. But the Peloponnese, a lesser-explored coastal region, delivers everything you’re craving in a Greek getaway with a fraction of the frenzy. Enter Costa Navarino, located in Greece’s Messenia region, where the secret weapon may...

Town of Greece overspent last year’s budget by $5 million, new supervisor says

GREECE, N.Y. — The Town of Greece’s budget problems may have been worse than first reported.Town Supervisor Jeff McCann’s office said Friday that the last administration overspent last year’s budget by $5 million. McCann also said there was nearly $1 million in unbudgeted legal expenses due to lawsuits the town has been fending off.“I have been alarmed by the lack of transparency in the Town’s budget process – from the unavailability of public financial documents to the Town Board voting on budgets without any detail,” McCann said in a press release. Previous Town Supervisor Bill Reilich said he finds the allegations hard to believe and that McCann’s office must not be taking into consideration all revenue streams. The allegations come almost two months after the town eliminated a policy le...

Greece and China: Bridging Two Worlds – The ‘Greek Twins’ Speak to TNH

BEIJING – It all began almost by chance – an unexpected choice, a language that seemed foreign, a distant country. From a spontaneous decision at age 18 to millions of viewers and a life split between Greece and China, the journey of the ‘Greek Twins’, identical twins Marianna and Sofia Erotokritou, is not just a story of adaptation – it is a story of translation: of people, habits, and dreams. The National Herald: Starting from the beginning, when did you go to China and what made you choose such a distant Asian country? Greek Twins: We moved to China at the age of 18 to study. The truth is, it wasn’t something we had planned years in advance. It came about somewhat unexpectedly in our final year of high school, when we began learning Chinese at our father’s encouragement. From that point...

Our goal is to push the European Union in this direction as well.” He described the measures as “difficult, but necessary,” adding, “The addictive design of certain applications, and a business model based on capturing your attention — on how long you stay in front of a screen — takes away your innocence and your freedom. That has to stop somewhere.” Related: Lawmakers Around The World Take Action To Protect Children From Social Medi...

Greece’s new laws crack down on art fakes and forgeries – an expert in the market for shady art explains why they might backfire

The art market is riddled with fakes and forgeries. Yet in most countries, those trading in genuine masterpieces are left to their own devices when it comes to monitoring art sales – creating their own ways to flag problematic objects and verify the authenticity of others.
