Greece is preparing to transfer artillery and ammunition worth nearly €200M to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Greek government intends to strengthen Ukraine’s military by sending self-propelled howitzers, shells, and missiles valued at €199.4M. Specifically, the military aid package will include 60 M110A2 self-propelled howitzers and 150,000 203 mm shells of various types, including cluster munitions. The Czech Republic will act as an intermediary in the supply of these munitions. It is expected that the Greek National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, will soon make a decision on this matter. Officials note that the transfer of weapons will not reduce Greece’s defense capabilities. Meanwhile, the United States is encouraging Athens to buy more weapons for Ukraine through the PURL initiative. There are also discussions concerning the transfer of Mirage 2000-5 mul...

Greece in 2026: External Shocks Risk Derailing Fragile Economic Revival

The year 2026, economically at least, is starting on an optimistic note for Greece, with Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis heading the Eurogroup, an informal convocation of finance ministers from the Eurozone. His election to the post in December represented “the country’s transition from the years of bailouts and austerity to a position of credibility and influence”, Nick Malkoutzis, editor of economic analysis website MacroPolis, told BIRN. The EU, the IMF and the Greek government all predict that Greece’s GDP will grow by an average of 2 per cent in 2026. This growth outlook “is credible, but far from guaranteed”, Malkoutzis cautioned. The positive projections, he explained, rely on EU funds, tourism, and the absence of major external shocks. Growth could weaken if EU support fades,...

Government officials reject criticism from Samaras

[InTime News] Government officials on Wednesday rejected criticism from former prime minister Antonis Samaras over the terms of an offshore gas exploration deal with US energy giant Chevron and a troubled project for an undersea power link with Cyprus. Officials said that the comments by Samaras – who has been expelled from the governing New Democracy party that he formerly headed – are “out of touch with reality.” The officials spoke on customary condition of anonymity. Samaras, who has reportedly been toying with the idea of forming a new political party well to the right of ND, had claimed that the agreement with Chevron for exploration off Crete contained terms that implicitly cast doubt on Greek sovereignty in the area. He also accused ...
