What to Expect from Today’s PlayStation State of Play

A lengthy, 60-plus minutes Sony State of Play is heading our way this Thursday, February 12, and promises new looks at “third-party and indie games headed to PS5, along with the latest from teams at PlayStation Studios.” So, what upcoming games can we expect to see fresh reveals for and gameplay of? Well, here’s what we think is likely to show up, as well as a few out-there guesses.ExclusivesSeeing as it's shaping up to be PlayStation’s biggest game of 2026, you’d perhaps have expected Wolverine to show up in Thursday’s stream. Well, a late spanner has been thrown into the works via Insomniac’s official X account, which claims that we won’t be seeing any more of its latest Marvel game until “Spring 2026”. Last time I checked, February was in Winter, so maybe we’ll have to wait a little lon...

EU looks to poach US scientists amid research funding cuts

European efforts to poach top US scientists in the wake of the White House’s cuts to research funding are paying off. Paris announced grant awards to 46 academics, with 41 relocating from the US, under its Choose France for Science initiative; eight are from Columbia University, which has lost hundreds of millions in government funding. The EU has a comparable plan, which has also had success. Research funding applications from US-based researchers have more than doubled since President Donald Trump’s second term began. UK institutions have also seen a spike in US applications, and Beijing has been a beneficiary, too: CNN counted at least 85 scientists leaving the US for China last year, most of them Chinese-born. The evolving science of Long COVID and its far-reaching economic and social impacts

Image: © Daisy-Daisy | iStock Emily Taylor, President and Chief Executive Officer of Solve M.E., discusses the significant socioeconomic burden of Long COVID, highlighting advances in research that can improve understanding of Long COVID and enable targeted interventions and better treatment protocols Long COVID is an increasingly serious burden to the US economy. Even by conservative calculations, existing cases of Long COVID could cost up to $6.6 billion (Bartsch et al., 2025).  Breakthroughs in Long COVID research shape how we understand, mitigate, and reduce the socioeconomic impact of the disease. Knowing who is more likely to develop Long Covid means interventions can be targeted — potentially reducing the proportion of people impacted. Improved understanding of the mecha...

Gemini hit with 100,000+ prompts in cloning attempt

Google says its flagship artificial intelligence chatbot, Gemini, has been inundated by “commercially motivated” actors who are trying to clone it by repeatedly prompting it, sometimes with thousands of different queries — including one campaign that prompted Gemini more than 100,000 times. In a report published Thursday, Google said it has increasingly come under “distillation attacks,” or repeated questions designed to get a chatbot to reveal its inner workings. Google described the activity as “model extraction,” in which would-be copycats probe the system for the patterns and logic that make it work. The attackers appear to want to use the information to build or bolster their own AI, it said. The company believes the culprits are mostly private companies or researchers looking to gain a...

Snowball Earth was not completely frozen, new study reveals

Researchers at the University of Southampton have found new evidence that Earth's climate did not completely grind to a halt during its most extreme ice age, a time often called Snowball Earth. This dramatic chapter unfolded during the Cryogenian Period, between 720 and 635 million years ago. Scientists have long thought that during this interval, the planet's climate system essentially shut down. Massive ice sheets stretched all the way to the tropics, covering much of the globe in ice. From space, Earth may have looked like a giant snowball. Under these conditions, experts believed that exchanges between the atmosphere and oceans largely stopped, suppressing short term climate shifts for millions of years. A new study published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters challenges that assum...
