CatPAC hosts Sinners movie night in Ramsey – The Wayne Stater

The “Sinners Movie Night” hosted by WSC CatPAC on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 25, provided students with a free showing of the Oscar nominated movie “Sinners” in the Ramsey Theatre.

Since the event was being held in the Ramsey Theatre it was different from past events that usually took place in the Frey Suite in the student center.

“It was a good experience,” WSC student Diana Garcia said. “The theatre was a great fit to host because there are so many seats for lots of people to attend.”

Another WSC student Keishani Coenraad also said she enjoyed the experience.

“The screen was big and felt like I was actually at the movie theater,” Coenraad said.

Not only was the Ramsey Theatre a part of the event, but the movie selection made an impact on WSC students as well. The movie written and directed by Ryan Coogler is categorized as a “folk horror” and “period drama”, and according to IMDb has an approval rating of 7.5 out of 10 stars.

The movie is set in 1932 Mississippi and centers around two brothers making their way back home to “discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back”. The movie selection was important, because February was Black History Month and the cast was mainly African American actors.

“I think it is important to show movies about marginalized and underrepresented groups to spread awareness and support,” Garcia said.

Since the movie had a plethora of culture and themes in it, there were a wide variety of messages students could take from it.

“This movie showed history and culture in a unique way,” Coenraad said. “I believe that movies like this are important, so it’s great that CatPAC wants to show it to further spread the message of the film.”

“Sinners” has been receiving a lot of attention on the awards stage as well. According to IMDb, the movie has had 296 wins and 487 nominations. Most notably, it has been nominated for 16 Oscars which is the most Academy Award nominations in the history of that award ceremony.

With the combination of the film’s notoriety on a small and big scale, it has a great impact on students at WSC. Since there is a desire from students to see different cultures in movies, there is a great opportunity for more events like the Sinners Movie Night to take place on campus.
