RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Cheyenne River Youth Project is preparing to host its 26th annual Passion for Fashion event this weekend, giving teens a chance to celebrate self-expression while preparing for prom season.
Also known by its Lakota name, Wačhípí kta Iglúwiŋyeyapi — which means “Youth Get Ready for the Dance” — the event will take place Saturday, March 14, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at CRYP’s Cokata Wiconi Teen Center in Eagle Butte.
This year’s theme is “Barbie,” offering what organizers describe as a colorful and bold backdrop to celebrate young women and two-spirit youth during Women’s History Month. The teen center will feature artwork from Lakota artist Tammy “TamiJoy” Granados and banners with empowering quotes from the film.
The event is designed for students in grades 7 through 12. It will begin with a catered luncheon featuring chicken chipotle bowls and a Barbie-themed cake made by Garreau. Teens will also take part in icebreaker activities with Lakota elder Renee Iron Hawk and hear keynote speeches from River Gunville and Precious Cook, Miss He Sapa Win 2025–26.
After lunch, participants will head to the Morgan Yellowhead Gymnasium to choose prom dresses, formalwear, shoes and accessories. Volunteers will also offer hair styling, makeup and nail services, while community ambassadors will be available to connect with teens.
The evening will wrap up with a fashion show on CRYP’s catwalk, where participants can show off their outfits. Attendees will also receive swag bags filled with gifts.
For the second year in a row, Native-led beauty brand Prados Beauty is supporting the event by donating beauty products for the swag bags.
CRYP is also asking the community to donate new or gently used formalwear and accessories to support teens during prom season. Needed items include dresses — especially sizes 16 to 26 — tuxedos, suits, dress shirts, dress pants, ties, shoes in sizes 9 to 12, jewelry, hair accessories and self-care items such as makeup or bath sets. Gift cards and monetary donations are also welcome to help staff purchase items based on specific needs.
Teens who cannot attend the event will still be able to schedule private appointments to access formalwear and accessories.
