Two college students from Fullerton are taking financial literacy into their own hands with the rise of BuildMentalCapital, a student-led effort focused on making personal finance clear and accessible for young adults.
Co-Creators and educators Peter Yang (UCI student currently, former Troy HS student, Resident of Fullerton) and Founder/Co-Educator Austin Tsui (Community College Student, Contributor of volunteer events across Orange County) are driving this initiative. Their mission is to provide accessible insights into crucial financial concepts such as retirement accounts, investing, and long-term financial planning.
A meeting held last week drew dozens of attendees, where students discussed challenges like choosing retirement accounts, opening IRAs, and understanding compound growth. Many noted that confusing terminology and a lack of early education kept them from starting sooner.
BuildMentalCapital’s detailed IRA guide, reviewed by a financial advisor, has already helped several students open their first accounts. The initiative’s growth online, combined with its emphasis on simple and trustworthy explanations, has recently attracted interest from local media outlets.
As interest in the program continues to rise, Yang and Tsui are committed to their goal: to give young people the financial foundation they may have been denied. With more meetings planned in the upcoming months, BuildMentalCapital is poised to play an increasingly significant role in how students in Fullerton equip themselves for financial success.
