Dark Side of the Gates Foundation: The GMO Gamble in Africa

This 2024 documentary, directed by Jean-Baptiste Renaud and produced by Java Films, investigates the push for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Africa, driven by philanthropists, lobbyists, and businesses, with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at the forefront. It argues that GMOs are promoted as solutions to famine and malaria, funding research on crops like cassava and genetically altered mosquitoes, but these trials—banned in Europe due to risks—are conducted in Africa instead. The film highlights the imposition of a neoliberal development model favoring corporate agribusiness, where humanitarian aid intersects with business interests, potentially prioritizing private gains over public health and environmental concerns, through interviews with experts, farmers, and policymakers.
