Destiny 2 Renegades Is The Worst Launch In The Franchise

A major expansion launch for a live service titan like Destiny 2 always comes with immense anticipation. And high expectations naturally set the bar sky-high, but this also drastically increases the potential for a catastrophic drop if things don’t go according to plan.

Sadly, that catastrophic drop seems to be exactly what has been happening with Renegades, Bungie’s latest expansion that is Star Wars-themed for the game, which is certainly getting people talking – but not exactly for the reasons that the developers were hoping for.

According to SteamDB data, Destiny 2: Renegades has just debuted with shockingly low numbers, officially registering the worst simultaneous player launch in the entire history of the franchise.

The expansion, which curiously features a major Star Wars theme and had the potential to draw in new players, reached a peak of just 71,278 concurrent players on the platform.

As we speak, concurrent numbers remain worryingly low, currently hovering around the 40,000 player mark, suggesting that even the novelty of brand-new content wasn’t enough to hold the attention of the existing player base. You can check the live stats right below:

The performance of Destiny 2: Renegades establishes a new low point for the franchise, landing below even Episode Heresy, which previously held the unwanted negative record with a peak of 77,399 concurrent players.

The difference becomes even more worrying when compared to other previous major expansions for the game, such as Lightfall, which hit an impressive 316,750 simultaneous players at the time of its launch, and Shadowkeep, achieving a peak of 214,100 (considered modest at the time).

On top of the shocking performance data, the Destiny 2 community reception is also heavily divided, according to the expansion’s Steam page.

While some players are praising its new story and unique weapons, others are dismissing the content entirely, claiming that only fans of Star Wars will enjoy this specific update. In any case, Renegades is available now for PC and consoles if you are curious about exploring this new, controversial chapter yourself.
