Disney’s beloved Frozen franchise shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, and fans of Elsa, Anna, and the kingdom of Arendelle have plenty to look forward to in the coming years. Even with record-breaking box office history and exciting new theme park experiences–like Disneyland Paris’ World of Frozen at the new Disney Adventure World– the franchise continues to surprise.

A Franchise Built on Record-Breaking Success
When Frozen first hit theaters in 2013, few could have predicted just how seismic its impact would be. The original film hauled in a staggering $1.28 billion worldwide, instantly redefining what a modern Disney animated hit could look like. Six years later, Frozen II (2019) pushed that benchmark even further, grossing $1.45 billion globally and cementing the series as one of the crown jewels of Walt Disney Animation Studios.
Beyond the box office, the franchise fundamentally shifted Disney’s storytelling approach. Idina Menzel’s (Elsa) iconic rendition of “Let It Go” became a global anthem, earning the Academy Award for Best Original Song and catapulting Elsa and Anna (Kristen Bell) into pop-culture royalty. Rather than leaning on traditional romance-driven narratives, the films championed themes of sisterhood, independence, and emotional resilience–a creative pivot that clearly resonated with audiences worldwide.

Disney Confirms Frozen 3 and Frozen 4
Following Bob Iger’s high-profile return as CEO in November 2022, Disney wasted little time confirming that sequels were in development for several of its biggest animated franchises, including Frozen, Toy Story, and Zootopia. For Frozen fans, the most exciting update came at D23, where Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee unveiled first-look concept art for Frozen III, depicting Anna and Elsa venturing across an unfamiliar landscape atop mysterious animals.
Lee made clear that the story emerging from Frozen II would require not one but two films to fully resolve, stopping just short of officially announcing Frozen 4 outright. Iger had previously teased as much in November 2023, during the opening of the World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland, hinting that something bigger was already in motion. Frozen III is officially targeting a November 2027 release, pushed back from an earlier 2026 window, with Disney holding the traditional Thanksgiving spot for the film.

A Royal Wedding Could Be on the Way
Fans paying close attention to the World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris may have picked up on an exciting tease buried in a recent Disney+ Insider segment. The video features Jennifer Lee and Frozen 3 co-director Trent Correy visiting the park during its Snowflower Festival setting, where the pair sat down with Queen Anna herself.
During the conversation, Lee asked Anna about rumored wedding plans–a nod to her engagement to Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), which was confirmed at the close of Frozen II. Anna enthusiastically confirmed the excitement, revealing that Olaf and Kristoff have been cooking up a big surprise tied to the Snowflower Festival. By the end of the video, Lee told Correy–and by extension the audience–that guests were invited to the wedding, adding warmly, “We’re all going.” Correy also took the opportunity to express that he is “really excited” about what is in store for Frozen 3, which only adds fuel to the growing anticipation.

An 18-Year-Long Record Broken
What makes this wedding a major deal for the Disney animated canon–if true–is that it will be the first onscreen wedding in the Disney animated canon in 18 years. While Tangled Ever After, in 2012, showed Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) and Eugene Fitzherbert/Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) getting married, the animated short is not included in the official movie canon at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
With that in mind, the last wedding between main characters to appear in a feature film was in 2009’s The Princess and the Frog, which showed Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) and Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) being wed by Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis) in the final moments of the musical movie.

In the years that followed The Princess and the Frog, Walt Disney Animation Studios has focused on stories outside of the true love trope. From the sisterhood of Frozen to found families in Big Hero 6 (2014) and the Wreck-It Ralph series, family dynamics in Encanto (2021), and the coming-of-age narrative of the Moana movies, Disney has sidelined stories of romantic love in the last decade. Frozen 3 is now seemingly primed to put Anna and Kristoff front and center.
Production Has Begun–But Don’t Expect It Overnight
Despite the 2027 date being locked in, Frozen III is still in relatively early stages. Josh Gad, who voices the lovable Olaf, confirmed in late 2025 that recording had not yet started and that the cast had not yet heard any of the film’s songs. That said, in February 2026, Gad confirmed he had started recording. The actor was effusive in his praise, describing the story as “the grandest we’ve ever done” and suggesting the scope alone may be why two films are needed to tell it properly. For fans worried about another unnecessary sequel, Gad offered reassurance –this one, he says, is absolutely worth the wait.

A Franchise That Goes Far Beyond the Screen
Frozen‘s reach has never been limited to the multiplex. The franchise spans Broadway –where it ran from 2018 to great critical acclaim–through merchandise, video games, podcasts, and a sweeping collection of theme park experiences. Frozen Ever After at Walt Disney World, Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey at Tokyo DisneySea, and the immersive World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland and now Disneyland Paris, all stand as testaments to just how deeply embedded Arendelle has become in the Disney Parks experience.
On a broader cultural level, Frozen continues to spark conversation around representation, with ongoing speculation about whether future films may more directly explore queer interpretations of Elsa’s identity that audiences have long discussed. Whatever direction Disney chooses, one thing is certain–the world of Arendelle is far from finished, and with Frozen 3, Frozen 4, and potentially a royal wedding on the horizon, the story is far from over.
