When Miles Webs was a young teenager, he brought home a little puppy with black fur. He assumed her fur would stay mostly black forever, but seven years later, her appearance suddenly started to change.
From the minute she joined the Webs family, Beobi has always been a one-of-a-kind pup with a sassy personality. But in 2023, the black Lab became even more unique when she developed a mysterious white spot under her eye.
At the time, Webs was away on a family trip, so he and his wife assumed Beobi’s sudden change in appearance was simply a symptom of missing him.
“While I was gone, my wife started to notice her growing white spots,” Webs told The Dodo. “We thought it was from anxiety and stress from me being gone.”
Beobi was elated when Webs returned home a few days later, but her mysterious spots didn’t go away. Instead, they started growing.
“It started with a spot … which then developed into a crescent moon,” Webs said.
Over the course of a year, Beobi’s white spots turned into splotches around her eyes. And when it was time for Webs to go on his annual family trip again, the change only accelerated.
“It came suddenly and started rapidly growing from there,” Webs said.
While on his trip, Webs received constant photo updates from home, which showed even more white patches across Beobi’s body.
The transformation astounded everyone, including Webs’ extended family, who began asking for new pictures of Beobi to see how much she’d changed since they last saw her.
As striking as Beobi’s new panda-like markings were, the playful pup seemed completely unaware that her body was changing in any way. A quick trip to the vet confirmed that Beobi wasn’t sick.
“The vet didn’t notice any health changes, and she’s as happy as ever,” Webs said.
While Beobi didn’t receive a formal diagnosis at the vet, her family believes she has vitiligo: a condition that affects the body’s ability to produce pigment.
It’s been two years since Beobi’s white spot first appeared, and the sweet girl now has white patches all over her head, ears and body. Webs never expected his beloved black Lab to change colors in front of his eyes, but it’s only made him cherish her more.
“I’ve loved watching her change from a full black Lab to how she is now,” Webs said. “She’s [always] been my beautiful baby …”
