Donovan Mitchell Addresses Eye Injury After Cavaliers Win

The Cleveland Cavaliers extended their winning streak to four games Tuesday night, but much of the attention centered on Donovan Mitchell and the condition of his left eye.

Mitchell delivered a dominant performance in a 136-131 win over the Orlando Magic, finishing with 42 points, two rebounds and three assists in 35 minutes. Despite the offensive explosion, the All-Star guard continues to deal with a bruised left eye that has raised concern in recent days.

The injury occurred during a recent practice after an inadvertent hit from teammate Evan Mobley. Photos and videos circulating online show visible swelling and discoloration, making the injury appear more serious than it is.

After the game, Mitchell emphasized that while the eye may look alarming, the situation is improving.

“I can see now, so finally,” Mitchell said. “It’s been a few games. It’s been an interesting few days. Doctors say that I’m fine, but if I close this eye, it’s definitely a little blurry. It worked out tonight, so I’m getting better. This looks way worse than what it is.”

Vision Still Not Fully Normal

Mitchell acknowledged that the injury has affected his vision, particularly in recent games.

“Can’t really see out of my left eye,” he previously said. “It was tough. But I was still able to get to the free throw line. Was still able to make plays. My biggest thing was like, I may not have it scoring-wise, but what else am I doing to help?”

Even with that limitation, Mitchell showed no hesitation offensively, delivering one of his most efficient scoring performances of the season.

Injury Draws Reaction — Even From Family

The appearance of Mitchell’s eye has drawn widespread attention, including from those closest to him.

“Everybody keeps — especially my mom — letting me know that for sure,” he said. “Every text message, like every — she takes a picture of the screen. But this looks way worse than what it is.”

Mitchell added that the past few games have been an adjustment as he continues to regain full comfort with his vision.

“I would say Milwaukee and Chicago were two rough games for me,” he said. “Still trying to figure it out. But hey, get out there. It’s not bad. I’ll be fine.”

Cavaliers Close Out Win Behind Mitchell

Cleveland (45-27) leaned on Mitchell’s scoring to hold off Orlando’s late push and remained within striking distance of the No. 3 seed New York Knicks, whom they trail by 2.5 games heading into the homestretch.

Mitchell shot 14-of-22 from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and went a perfect 11-of-11 at the free-throw line, marking his sixth 40-point game of the season — tied for the fourth-most in the league.

James Harden added 26 points, including 22 in the first half, helping Cleveland take a 72-68 lead into the break. Evan Mobley contributed 19 points on a perfect 8-for-8 shooting performance along with nine rebounds and six assists.

The Cavaliers built a double-digit lead midway through the fourth quarter before the Magic rallied late. After Wendell Carter Jr. trimmed the deficit with a pair of free throws in the final minute, Mitchell answered with a driving floater with 13.7 seconds remaining to secure the win.

Continued Success Against Orlando

Mitchell’s performance continued a strong trend against Orlando.

He now has three 40-point games in 23 regular-season meetings with the Magic and is averaging 27.2 points against them — the sixth-highest scoring average by any player in NBA history against the franchise.
